A Deposit Is Not a Favor You Are Asking For

A new client loves the proposal, the price feels fair, and everyone is eager to start. Then comes the deposit request, and suddenly the conversation feels tense, as if you just asked for something unreasonable. That discomfort is common, and it is worth examining.

A deposit is a normal business mechanic, not a personal request

Materials get purchased, calendar time gets blocked, and other potential clients get turned away the moment you commit to a project. A deposit simply reflects that this commitment is real on both sides, not just on yours.

Framing it this way, out loud if needed, removes the awkwardness. You are not asking for special treatment; you are describing how serious work has always been structured, in nearly every industry that takes on custom projects.

A refused deposit is useful information

A client who resists a modest, clearly explained deposit is often signaling something about how they will treat deadlines, revisions, or the final invoice later. Not always, but often enough that the resistance itself deserves attention.

This does not mean every hesitant client is a problem. But a pattern of pushing back on a standard, reasonable request before work has even started is worth taking seriously rather than explaining away.

A simple, consistent policy removes the awkwardness

Decide on a standard deposit percentage or amount and apply it the same way to every client, every time. Consistency removes the feeling that you are singling anyone out, because the policy exists independent of who is asking.

State it plainly in the proposal itself, before any conversation about hesitation can happen: this is simply how projects begin. Most clients accept it without a second thought once it is presented as routine rather than negotiable.

Look at your last project that started without a deposit and ask honestly whether that decision cost you time, stress, or money later.
