Hire Based on the Number, Not the Feeling of Being Overwhelmed

The moment a business owner feels consistently overwhelmed, hiring starts to feel like the obvious next step. The feeling is real and worth taking seriously, but it answers a different question than the one that actually determines whether hiring is financially safe.

Overwhelm measures workload, not affordability

Feeling stretched thin says something true about how much work exists right now. It says nothing directly about whether that workload will produce enough sustained revenue to comfortably cover a new salary for the months ahead.

Separating these two questions, explicitly, prevents a temporary busy stretch from turning into a long-term financial obligation that outlives the workload that inspired it.

A simple revenue test clarifies the decision

Before hiring, check whether the revenue increase that created the overwhelm has held steady for several consecutive months, not just one exceptional one. A single strong month is often a spike, not a new baseline.

If the elevated revenue has genuinely held for a meaningful stretch, the numbers are telling a very different story than if it was one unusually busy period surrounded by normal ones.

A smaller, reversible step often solves the same problem

Before committing to a full hire, consider whether a temporary contractor, a part-time arrangement, or simply raising prices slightly to reduce volume could relieve the same pressure with far less financial risk.

These smaller steps buy time to confirm the elevated workload is truly sustained before making a commitment that is much harder to reverse than it was to make.

Look at your last three months of revenue and ask honestly: is this a new normal, or one unusually busy stretch dressed up as one?
