The Marketing Spend That Never Shows Up in Your Books
Ask a small business owner how much they spend on marketing, and most will name their ad budget. Ask how many hours they spent last week on social posts, photos, and replies, and the number is usually much higher than they expect, and completely absent from any spreadsheet.
Unpaid time is still a cost
An hour spent writing a caption or editing a product photo is an hour not spent serving a paying customer or resting to serve one better tomorrow. Because no invoice is issued for it, this cost hides from the bookkeeping entirely, even though it is real and recurring.
Estimating even a rough hourly value for your own time and multiplying it by weekly marketing hours gives a number worth comparing against the results those hours produce. Some owners are surprised to find their 'free' marketing costs more than a small paid ad budget would.
Free promotion has an opportunity cost too
Every hour spent on unpaid promotion is an hour not spent refining a product, following up with a warm lead, or improving the invoice and onboarding experience that turns a first sale into a repeat one.
This does not mean organic marketing is a bad idea. It means the decision to spend time on it should be made with the same scrutiny you would apply to spending money, because time is the one budget you cannot borrow more of later.
A simple way to make the cost visible
Track marketing hours for two weeks the same way you would track billable hours: a simple note of the task and the time spent. At the end, multiply by your estimated hourly value and add it as a line item next to your paid marketing spend.
Once the true cost is visible, you can make an informed choice about which activities earn their time back in inquiries or sales, and which ones quietly drain hours without a proportional return.
Write down how many hours you spent on marketing last week, and ask whether that time produced a result worth its true cost.
