The Difference Between a Discount and a Deal That Protects Your Margin
When sales slow down, the fastest reflex is to cut the price. It works in the short term and undermines the business in the long term, because every future customer now expects the discounted price to be the real one. There is a better lever available: change what is included, not what is charged.
A discount quietly resets the customer's reference price
Once a customer buys at a lower price, that number becomes their new mental anchor for what your work is worth, regardless of what the original price used to be. The next full-price invoice then feels like an increase, even though nothing actually went up.
This effect compounds across repeat customers and referrals, since a client who got a discount will often tell a friend the discounted price, not the standard one, quietly training your entire referral pipeline to expect less.
Bundling protects the number while adding value
Instead of lowering your rate, add a small, low-cost extra: a faster turnaround, an additional revision, a short training call, or a complementary product. The customer feels rewarded, and your price list stays intact for the next customer.
This works especially well when the extra costs you less than the equivalent price cut would, which is common when the addition uses spare capacity you already have, such as unused time in a slower week.
Reserve real discounts for real reasons
A genuine, occasional discount for a specific reason, such as a first-time bulk order or a loyalty milestone, keeps its meaning precisely because it is rare and explained. A discount offered by default loses that meaning within a few months.
Decide in advance which situations justify an actual price reduction, write the rule down, and treat every other request for a lower price as an invitation to design a better bundle instead.
Look at your last three discounts and ask whether a bundled extra would have satisfied the customer just as well without touching your price.
